Cannabis has been used for various purposes for millennia. However, the active ingredients that have always been the focus of attention are THC and CBD – two of the over 100 cannabinoids that, although derived from the same plant, have very different effects on the body. While THC is known for its psychoactive properties, CBD's popularity stems from its calming and non-psychoactive effects. In this article, we explain the key differences and similarities between the two cannabinoids and how they are viewed in terms of cultivation and legal regulations.
THC – The focus is on the high
THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is psychoactive and responsible for the typical "high." It binds to CB1 receptors in the brain and influences our consciousness, often with a calming or euphoric effect. These properties make it attractive for recreational use, but THC is also used in medicine to alleviate chronic pain and sleep disorders. It is important to note that cannabis in general, and THC in particular, affects each person differently – therefore, overly broad generalizations cannot be made.
CBD – The gentle all-rounder
CBD (cannabidiol) is the "gentle" counterpart to THC. It has no intoxicating effect, but rather promotes relaxation and reduces inflammation. Thanks to its non-psychoactive properties, CBD is valued worldwide for numerous health applications, such as the treatment of anxiety or epilepsy. CBD is also well-known in cosmetics – for example, in skincare products like creams and oils.
Collective Power – The Entourage Effect
Although THC and CBD have different effects, together with the terpenes of the cannabis plant they create the so-called entourage effect. CBD can mitigate the undesirable side effects of THC, such as anxiety. Many medicinal preparations utilize this synergy to better address individual needs.
Cannabis cultivation: What growers need to know
For cultivation, the desired effect – THC or CBD – makes little difference. The plants are essentially grown in the same way. If there are minor differences, they include the fact that THC-rich plants require slightly more intensive care and strict light cycles to achieve high THC levels. CBD-rich plants are often more robust and require less effort.
Legal changes since April 1, 2024
The legal situation regarding cannabis in Germany changed fundamentally on April 1, 2024. THC-containing cannabis is now legal for recreational use under strict conditions. Adults are allowed to possess up to 50 grams of THC-containing cannabis and cultivate up to three THC-containing plants for personal use. The currently debated Industrial Hemp Liberalization Act (NLG) is expected to bring numerous simplifications and improvements to the cultivation and use of CBD-containing cannabis (“industrial hemp”) in 2025.
Conclusion:
THC and CBD each have their own advantages, but they also complement each other perfectly. It depends on the consumer and their needs which cannabinoid is best suited for them, or which mix will produce the desired effect.
