The cannabis plant has been known for millennia and has been used in a wide variety of cultures and for different purposes. However, there are several myths and misconceptions surrounding cannabis. In this article, we'll debunk some of the most common myths and shed light on the subject.

Myth 1: "Cannabis is addictive and a gateway to harder drugs"

Fact: The issue of addiction is extremely complex. Studies show that cannabis is nowhere near as addictive as substances like heroin or cocaine. While cannabis can lead to psychological dependence, physical dependence is significantly lower for most users. Only a small percentage develop a problematic relationship with the plant. The "gateway drug theory" has also been disproven: Most cannabis users do not move on to harder drugs.

Myth 2: "Cannabis is only for getting high"

Fact: That's false. The medical effects of cannabis are scientifically proven and recognized. Research shows that the cannabinoids THC and CBD, in particular, have positive effects on chronic pain, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and nausea during chemotherapy. Its use as medicinal cannabis has been legal for years in many countries, including Germany, and it is dispensed to patients.

Myth 3: "Cannabis is exclusively a recreational drug"

Fact: While cannabis is often associated with recreational use and getting a "high," it also holds significant cultural and ritual value in many cultures. In some traditional societies, such as in India and Nepal, cannabis has been used for spiritual and ceremonial purposes for centuries. Furthermore, non-intoxicating cannabinoids like CBD are gaining importance worldwide as everyday companions, without producing a psychoactive effect.

Myth 4: "Cannabis weakens the immune system and makes you sick"

Fact: This statement is incorrect. While the misuse of cannabis (as well as other substances) can have negative health effects, current studies suggest that cannabinoids can actually support the immune system – particularly in cases of chronic inflammation. Used in moderation and under medical supervision, cannabis can have positive effects on immune function and overall well-being.

Myth 5: "Cannabis lowers performance and motivation"

Fact: The image of the unmotivated "stoner" is widespread, but by no means always accurate. Scientifically, the relationship between cannabis and motivation is complex: While very high doses of THC can lead to lethargy in some people, others, including many artists, report increased creativity and concentration. As always, everyone reacts differently, and mindful consumption plays a crucial role.

    Conclusion: Knowledge instead of myths

There are many rumors and prejudices surrounding cannabis. Inform yourself before forming an opinion – open communication and accurate information are the first steps to better understanding cannabis in society and benefiting from its positive properties.
